The Jewish Cultural Quarter offers a unique glimpse into a rich history which has been highly influential and intertwined in all aspects of Amsterdam’s development. Jewish culture in the Netherlands has had a tremendous influence on the development of the country, but in particular on its capital Amsterdam. Although severely affected by the events of World War II, there has been a steady Jewish population in the area for over 800 years. 

The attractions of the Jewish Cultural Quarter consist of a large collection of several thousand objects, works of art, and documents as well as a frequently changing temporary exhibitions. The Jewish Cultural Quarter spans over five different locations that give you a glimpse into Jewish life in all its facets and take you on a journey through the Jewish quarter and over 400 years of Jewish history in the Dutch capital. 

Go on a journey through time in the old Jewish neighbourhood

At the Jewish Cultural Quarter, you can discover an up-close, chronological overview of the Jewish community’s significant contributions to the art and history of the Netherlands. The Jewish Museum consists of four monumental synagogue buildings and provides a fascinating picture of the past and present of Jewish Life in the country. Children can learn more about the topic in the JMH Children's Museum.

The Portuguese Synagogue is located at the heart of the Jewish Cultural Quarter. Marvel at the perfectly preserved 17th century interior and a unique collection of ceremonial objects here. It is also home to Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos, the world's oldest intact Jewish library. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. 

The quarter is further home to the Hollandsche Schouwburg and the National Holocaust Museum, tracing the story of the persecution of Jewish people in the Netherlands and providing a place of commemoration for all the people deported during World War II.
