Activities during Christmas in Holland - Amsterdam

Christmas in Amsterdam can be like a fairytale: the whole city is lit up and if you are lucky the streets are covered in a blanket of snow. The beauty of Amsterdam during Christmas is not the only good part, there are also lots of things to do. If you go sightseeing in our Hop-on Hop-off bus & boat you will pass different stops where it is really worthy to hop-off and check out the Dutch Christmas spirit.

To get in the Christmas mood right from the beginning, start at the big Christmas tree on the famous Dam square (stop 1 bus & boat). This tree is more than 20 meters high and is located in front of the Royal Palace. With over 40.000 (energy efficient) LED-lamps and the beautifully lighted Bijenkorf, you really see and feel the Christmas vibe.
If you continue your sightseeing and hop-off at stop 5 of the boat, you can visit the Flower market. Here you can find Christmas trees in all varieties and sizes. The Christmas Palace is also a good place to visit to find the best Christmas present for under your Christmas tree.
At stop 5 of the bus or boat, you find yourself at walking distance the Royal Theatre Carré. In this magical theatre, you can see the World Christmas Circus in the time around Christmas. Over 100 artists from all over the world work together to make this show the best Christmas Circus there is.
Last but not least you can hop-off a little further at stop 7 of the bus or boat and visit the Museum square. This is really the best place to get the typical Dutch Christmas feeling, including an ice skating rink! Also, the Winter Market Amsterdam is located on the Museum square. Here you can enjoy many sparkling lights, festive music, buy some nice presents and of course yummy snacks.

Typical Dutch Christmas food

You may wonder what Dutch people eat during the Christmas holidays. A really popular meal where Dutch people spend the entire evening on is Gourmetten. A Gourmet is like a tiny barbeque where everyone puts his own meat, fish and/or vegetables on. You can even make some small pancakes or omelets. Together with this, there is salad on the table, different kinds of sauces and French bread with herb butter (‘’stokbrood met kruidenboter’’).
Also, like in a lot of countries, stuffed turkey is a popular meal choice during Christmas in Holland. During the time that the turkey is in the oven, people have a cozy get together with a nice glass of (Mulled)wine or hot chocolate.
Another great meal Dutch people like to eat is meatballs and deviled eggs during Christmas (and actually during every festive occasion). They can eat this next to their meal, as a snack or on bread. An example of ingredients in the deviled eggs is the egg yolk mixed with butter, mayonnaise, onion, mustard, pepper, salt, and paprika powder.

Don’t miss out on your Christmas time in Amsterdam and visit all the highlights that will make your Christmas as memorable and fun as possible.
